What are Model Horses?
Model horses are scale replicas of a horse.  They are made by many manufacturers and are made of many different materials.  Model horses can be made from resin, plastic or porcelain.  Horse models are either made to be exact replicas of specific breeds or famous horses or they can be made to be fanciful, imaginary horse figures.
 
 
 

What can I do with my Model Horses? 

Besides collecting your favorite horses as models there are several other activities that many collectors like to do with their horses.

Customizing:  Many artists and other collectors enjoy customizing their model horses.  There are many techniques used to customize horses, including altering position or color and adding hair to the mane and tail.  Today customizing model horses as become a hobby standard.  Many artists make a living from customizing model horses.

Model Horse Shows:  There are two ways to participate in model horse showing.  First, you can enter a photo show.  Photo showing is very convenient for people who can't travel a long distance to show their models.  Pictures of the models with various backgrounds and participating in different equine events are entered into the show.  Models are judged on the quality of the photo, accuracy of breed depiction and condition. 

Live showing is very different.  Participants actually bring their models to the show and they are judged usually on condition and correctness.  There may also be classes on the collectibility of the models.  These shows are usually a fun place to meet other collectors and also to buy, sell, or trade model horses.

Props and Tack:  Many model horse collectors enjoy making props and tack for their model horses.  Props are things that will enhance a scene, such as fences, trees, and backgrounds.  Tack would include bridles, halters, and saddles.  Other types of tack are harnesses or Arabian costumes.    Making tack and props and selling them can be a fun way to supplement your collection.
